Personal Injury Protection

For many people today, a personal injury protection policy has become something they consider necessary when driving in their everyday lives. We all have many responsibilities these days which we cannot dismiss, not to mention looking after our families as well. PIP's (personal injury protection) are a standard part of some plans which also include terminal illness and disability cover and this might be a more efficient way to purchase this type of insurance. Unfortunately, any insurance policy is expensive (no matter how important) and many of the most vulnerable families that this would benefit just cannot afford to add another plan to their portfolio.

The situation can be made worse when the policy has not been researched carefully and does not insure everything it was intended to. In America personal injury is now a required form of insurance cover in many states although the amount does vary depending where you are in the USA. This difference is highlighted by the amount of cover required by a driver in Alaska being ten times the amount required by a similar driver in Florida. Although there are still some states that have not passed a law on personal injury protection at this time, there is no reason why you should wait until it has before you arrange it.

A large amount is paid out against these plans for the insured and any person traveling with them, up to four fifths of the costs. There are some expensive items covered by this plan, which will pay out even if the policy holder is to blame, including medical costs for the driver and people in the vehicle with him. In order to keep costs down when you purchase your cover it is worth checking your current insurance in case there are areas that are already covered, thereby reducing the amount of protection required. Conditions like medical costs and even lost time form work can be part of your current health insurance plan which will save a considerable sum.

Depending on the plan, you may not require any additional cover or only minimal in the worst case scenario. How you drive will also help determine whether or not you need personal injury protection. If you carry passengers on a regular basis your health insurance might cover your own medical expenses, it won't however, cover those of your passengers (unless they are members of your family who are on your health plan). Needless to say, if you find that the cover afforded by the personal injury protection is insufficient for passengers then you will have to top this cover up.

Any passenger in your vehicle should feel safe so it is the driver's responsibility to ensure this is the case. For your own peace of mind you should want to make sure that even if your state does not make it mandatory to provide personal injury protection, you should feel obliged too. This is one area where age and driving experience can be on the driver's side and insurance policy costs can be lowered. On the other hand, when you are young and just starting out and probably don't have much in the way of health and liability insurance, you will want to protect yourself, your family and your future by carrying as much insurance as you can afford.
